Pentagram and script on a forearm, with a Sphynx cat
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A person's tattooed forearm and hand hold a hairless Sphynx cat. The forearm carries a large pentagram in a circle, floral elements and script lettering, with a small red rose on one finger. The ink is mostly grey and black with touches of red, and the shallow focus keeps the cat's face and the arm in view against a dark leather background.

Nobody wanted the bald cat when she came up the gangway at Grimsby, and the mate said so twice. She had no fur at all, only grey skin wrinkled like a dropped glove, and she sat on the bollard looking at the ship as if she were the one doing the hiring. The cook took her in because the rats had been at the flour again and she did not mind the look of her.

The cat would not eat from the bowl. She ate from the cook's hand, and only after the cook had drawn a star in a ring on the galley step in chalk, which her grandmother had told her kept the sea from coming in under the door. The crew laughed about it. Then they stopped laughing the night the Mary Ellen took a sea over the bow and every lamp in the forecastle went out at once. The cat walked the length of the dark mess with her tail up and found the spare oil under the bunk before anyone could find a match.
After that the men brought her gifts. A red rose cut from a garden in Scarborough was pressed between the pages of the logbook. A silver ring off a drowned man's hand was left on the stove, and the cook would not wear it. Each Sunday the cook wrote the ship's name on the slate in careful letters, and the cat sat on it until the chalk was rubbed clean.
On the morning the Mary Ellen came back into Hull without her cook, the cat was found on the galley step, curled round the star. Nobody scrubbed it away. The men drew it again each voyage, a little bigger, and left the door on the latch.
