Tattooed hands holding a black cat
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands with tattoos hold a black cat against a dark background, with a pink-nailed hand touching its head from above. The larger tattoo on the lower hand shows an eye and a dagger in colour with dark outlines, and smaller tattoos sit on the fingers. Colour appears in teal and red accents, with black and grey shading in the surrounding designs.

Dear Mags,

The cat turned up on the third night at the Halfway Motel, sitting on the bonnet of my van as if it had paid for the room. Black as a stove, with a white-tipped tail it would not let anyone touch. Mr Oduya at the petrol pump says it belonged to the last tenant, a woman who sold lamp oil and fortune cards out of the back of a truck, and who left in a hurry the week the sun went red over the ridge. I have decided it is mine now. I have called it Sunday because it arrives every seventh evening, or that is what I have counted.
Yesterday I walked out past the dead water tower to look at the old signboard someone painted on the wall of the ruined diner. An eye with a dagger through it, the blade red, the paint gone chalky with heat. Below it, a sun with its rays scratched out. Oduya says the woman drew it to keep the road honest, and I laughed, but I stood there a long time with my palm flat on the bricks, and they were still warm from the afternoon.
Sunday came back at dusk and walked straight over my boots, then sat in the one patch of shade by the door and watched the highway the way the eye on the wall does. I think I understand the sign now. You do not fear the road for what it does to you. You keep watch on it so it cannot creep up on you. Tomorrow I will paint my own version on the cab door and see whether the cat approves.
Write soon. Tell Dad the van is still running, against all reasonable expectation.
Yours, Jen
