Traditional dog with glasses and flowers on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A white fluffy dog wearing tortoiseshell glasses sits beside a person's bare leg, which carries a tattoo of a dog's face with glasses and its tongue out. The tattoo has bold black outlines and is framed by orange and red flowers with dark leaves and a small ribbon banner at the lower right. Colour is saturated and the photo is shot close with a colourful rug in the background.

Dear Mr Lusk,

You asked again about the dog, so here is the whole of it. Bramble came to Seaview House in June with a leather case, a tin of liver pills and a pair of tortoiseshell spectacles that belonged to Colonel Ashdown, who died in room four owing a fortnight's rent. Mrs Cole said the spectacles were worth more than the arrears, and the dog has not once taken them off since.

Every morning he sits on the front step with the Gazette folded under one paw, reading the tide tables with his tongue out the side of his mouth, as if the numbers vex him. The fishermen from the harbour call him Professor. Last Saturday he walked the length of the prom behind the Punch and Judy man, who did not notice until the crowd turned round to laugh.

On Sunday the Whitsun bunting came down in a gale, and Bramble carried the whole lot up the hill to the chapel. Reverend Hart found him asleep on a heap of flags with a marigold tucked behind one ear. Nobody could say where he had got the flower from, but the vicar said a dog who reads the tide tables and fetches the bunting deserves a little mercy, so he has been excused the rent for August.

I enclose a drawing the lady from the tea rooms made of him, with flowers round his head. She says she means to have it inked on somebody's leg. I told her Bramble would want a fee.

Yours, Edna Pryce
