Black and grey botanical wreath with the words MY BODY MY RULES tattooed on the outer thigh.

Floral wreath with lettering on thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink wreath of leaves, roses and daisy-like flowers curves around the words MY BODY MY RULES on the outer thigh. The linework is crisp and even, with fine shading in the foliage and petals. The design is entirely black ink on skin, and the composition sits neatly across the thigh against a dark skirt.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ashby came into the shop on a Thursday with a jam jar of dried sea-holly and a face like a shut gate. She wanted a wreath for her front door, nothing fancy, and she wanted words painted along the ribbon in my best capitals. I asked what they were to say. She said, 'Just what they've always said in this house.' I didn't press. Sign-writing pays the rent, and you learn not to read a customer's hand before she's handed you the pen.

I built the wreath on a willow ring the way my gran taught me, binding everything in one direction so the leaves all lean towards the light. Fern first, then rose hips, then the little daisies off the verge behind St Edmund's, which Father Doyle pretends not to know I pick. The lettering was the hard part. I ruled faint pencil lines across a sheet of card and inked MY BODY above MY RULES with a size-two brush. My hand didn't shake once, which surprised me more than it surprised her.

She collected it on the Saturday and paid in coins, counting them out slowly on the counter. The next Thursday it was back on my step, wrapped in a bread bag, with the daisies turned to face the road and a fresh sprig of sea-holly pushed into the join. Tucked under the twine was a note in pencil: Hang it where the wind can't read it.

I hung it in the window instead. Anyone passing can read it perfectly well, and the wind has never once bothered to try.
