Flower of life on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular flower of life design, built from overlapping circles, sits at the centre of the forearm. The interior linework is fine and pale against a densely stippled dark ring, and a scatter of solid and outlined dots extends outward from the lower and upper edges. The image is a close, straight-on view in soft daylight with a plain background.

Nobody buys round loaves on a Tuesday, Ruth said, so we made forty anyway, and I scored every one before the windows went grey over the car park behind Hadley Parade. The lame was a razor blade clamped in a bamboo handle. You drew it across the top of the dough in a single pull, and if your wrist hesitated the crust split where it pleased rather than where you'd meant it.

Ruth's grandmother had taught her a pattern for the feast-day loaves: a ring of overlapping circles, each one cut so the crumb showed through like light between fingers. It took nine cuts, always in the same order, and the first time I tried it the lattice folded into a wound. I lost six loaves that morning. Ruth didn't scold. She pinned a card to the board with a drawing on it, every circle drawn in pencil and then shaded, and beside it in capitals she'd written SLOWER THAN YOU THINK.
By five the ovens were roaring and the kitchen smelled of scorched sugar and yeast. I took the seventh loaf, the one I'd done without looking at the card, and set it on the rack. Its circles had opened in the heat, each seam lifting into a pale ridge, and the whole round looked like a seed head someone had pressed into the flour. Ruth came over, wiped her hands on her apron, and tapped the card with one floury finger. 'Right,' she said. 'Now you can stop looking at it.'
