Flower of life tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single black linework tattoo of the flower of life sits inside a large circle, made of overlapping evenly spaced circles that form a repeating six-fold pattern. The lines are fine and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is solid black. The design is centred on the skin with a warm, reddish-toned photo filter, and a dark garment and a wooden surface are visible behind it.

Dear Ada, the big top came down in Carlisle on Tuesday and I have been sitting on the ring curb ever since with the ledger on my knee, trying to make the numbers add to something. They don't. Mr Pelham counted eleven people through the gate on Saturday, two of them the vicar's boys who came in for nothing.

But I want to tell you about the rings. You remember the old hoop act, the seven brass hoops Lazar used to pass one through another so that they seemed to breathe. Last month he sold them to a scrapyard in Penrith to pay the farrier. This morning I found the drawing he kept pinned inside the wagon door: a circle, and inside it, seven circles laid over one another, each centre sitting on the edge of the next, until the whole thing looked like a pattern a pot-maker would paint on a plate. He said it was how the hoops had to be spaced, that a loose ring falls and a true one turns forever. He had marked each centre with a compass point, tiny holes in the paper.

I sat with it for an hour, tracing the overlaps with my thumb. Every line in that drawing meets another line exactly where it should. Nothing wobbles. I think that is why the act worked: not the brass or the spangles, but the sums underneath them.

So I have decided to keep the drawing and let the ledger go. Come in August if you can, and bring your good compass. We will see whether a circus with eleven people in it can still be measured true.

Love, Tom
