Flowering stem in bold black silhouette
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A tall stem carries several open five-petalled flowers and closed buds, with leaves curling along the lower section. The linework is solid black with no shading, so the petals and leaves are defined by negative space and sharp edges. The design sits on a plain cream background and is composed as a single vertical column.

The mallow came up through the lift shaft at Harrow Deep the spring after the water took the lower town, and nobody could say who had planted it. Ines Okafor, who kept the seed ledger for the pumping station, went up with a knife and a sack to cut it down, because its roots had found the cable runs and the cable runs fed the sluices. She stood at the foot of it a long time first. It was black where the light touched it and black where it did not, with no colour at all, only shapes, like something drawn to be read from across a field.

The old men at the station said such a plant always had a price. Ines did not believe in prices. She counted the buds instead: seven closed, three open, the open ones with five petals each, sharp at the edges as cut tin. She knelt and reached for the stem and found it warm, the way a sleeping animal is warm. Then she heard the sluice gate grind two levels down, and understood that the water had not been let out for a month, and that a bloom opening meant something had turned over in the dark.
She did not cut it. She took the sack down to the sluice instead and found Tomas Reyes asleep against the valve wheel with his lamp dead. She woke him with the handle of the knife. Together they wound the lowest leaves, which curled like fists, around the iron spindle, and the gate stopped its groaning.
The next morning the topmost bud had opened. Ines wrote it in the ledger beneath the day's rainfall, and under that, in smaller letters, the word keep.
