Nell had worked the signal box at Hollin Cross for eleven years, and in all that time nothing had ever stopped on the platform for longer than it took to drink a cup of tea. So when the 6.40 crept past her window on Tuesday with its carriage windows down, she was the only one who saw the dragonfly land on the sill of the guard's van and stay there, wings flat and glinting like wet glass.

Dougie Pryce, the guard, flapped his hat at it when the train pulled in at Ashby Fold. Nell walked down from the box with her hands in her coat pockets and told him to leave it be. It had come a long way from the water meadows, she said, and it had a right to ride as far as it liked. Dougie shrugged and let the train take it on through the cutting, past the old brickworks and the lines of willow that had been left to grow wild along the embankment.

At the terminus the platform ran out into a tangle of ferns and pale lilies. Someone had planted them between the sleepers decades ago, and they had spread every summer since, until the buffers were half hidden under green. Nell stood among the stems while the engine ticked and cooled. The dragonfly lifted off the van roof, circled once above the lilies, and settled on a frond that curved out over the cinders like a hand held open.

She left it there. When the train reversed back toward the water, she was already climbing the steps to the box, pulling the lever that would send it home.
