Flying birds with let it go script
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows seven solid black bird silhouettes in various flight positions, scattered across the upper and middle of a plain white background. Their wings are drawn as simple filled shapes with no interior linework or shading. The phrase let it go is written in thin black cursive script at the lower right, balancing the flock.

The flour was still warm under my palms when the first starlings lifted off the chimney stack opposite, seven of them in a ragged arrow, and I stopped kneading to watch. Mrs Okafor's dough was proving in the drawer behind me and the shutter was only half up, so the street was grey and empty except for the hum of the ovens.

My father ran this bakery for thirty-one years and never once looked up at the birds. He said they were the council's problem. Every morning he swept the step before the bread came out, and every morning he told me the same thing about the gulls: leave a loaf on the sill and it belongs to them. I learnt early that a thing you keep is a thing you guard, and I guarded this place so well that I missed the year the rent went up, then the year he stopped coming in at all.
The sale went through on a Tuesday. The buyers wanted the ovens and the name painted over the door, and I found I did not mind about the name. What I minded was the sill, with its chipped green paint and the dent where his elbow used to rest.
On my last morning I was in before the flour delivery, the way I always had been. I tore a tray of day-old rolls into pieces with my fingers, set them out along the ledge, and stood back in the doorway. The starlings came down in a rush, then rose together, wings loud against the dark, and I let the door swing shut behind me without locking it.
