"let's go" script on an index finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown in profile with the index finger pointing forward, the thumb raised and the other fingers curled, wearing a khaki knitted sleeve. The words "let's go" are written in thin black cursive lettering along the top of the index finger. The shallow lighting falls on the skin against a pale background that fades to dark on the right.

The 9.12 was cancelled at ten past nine, and by half past the platform had filled with people who believed that if they stood close enough to the rails the train would feel guilty and turn up. Ruth Hebden, who ran the buffet for thirty-one years, slid a tea across the counter to the boy at the end of the bench and told him nobody was leaving Carlisle tonight. He was perhaps twelve, in a school blazer too thin for March, holding a cardboard envelope on his knees.

I learned his name was Tomasz, that his grandmother lived in Dumfries and had taken a turn, and that his mother had put him on the wrong train at Preston. He had got off at the first station with a light on. The clock above the stairs said twenty to eleven. The signal at the far end of the platform flickered from red to white and back again, a fault, nothing that would move anything.
At eleven I took the lamp out to check the points and found him on the cinder edge past the lamp post, staring up the line into the dark where the Dumfries road bent away. I did not tell him a train was coming. I held up my hand the way signalmen do when they mean wait, then turned it and pointed my first finger down the track, towards the lit windows of the stock in the sidings, the carriage with its door propped open for the crew.
'Is that ours?' he said. 'It's the one going,' I said. He looked at me as if I'd made a joke, then tucked the envelope under his arm and walked towards my finger. I said the only thing I had left to say, which was let's go, and we climbed aboard together into the warm dark while the engine woke up like a dog clearing its throat.
