Mags had sewn canvas for forty years and never tied a knot she didn't mean, so when the camp manager rang from Holbrook asking for the old striped tent back, she said yes before he finished the sentence. The thing had been folded in a crate since the summer of the flood, and it smelled of mice and woodsmoke. She laid it across the workshop floor and found the seam that had split under the peak, the one her late husband had always blamed on the wind.

She worked through the afternoon with the sun coming in red through the dusty window, the same red as the disc that sat above the mesa on the wall calendar. Each stitch drew the rust and cream stripes back into line. Outside, the dog that wandered the lot had left its prints in the dried mud, a neat row of them heading towards the cold ring of stones behind the shed, where somebody had once burned a fire too big for the space.

By dusk the tent stood on its poles in the yard, as crooked as it had ever been. Mags sat by the stones with a flask of tea and waited, the way she used to wait for the boys to come home from the valley. A pair of crows came down, then lifted again, and she counted the stars as they arrived one by one over the ridge.

Then she noticed the prints had gone round the stones twice, neat and patient, and she did not get up to follow them. She finished her tea and let the fire stay out.
