Flying silhouettes and crescent on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the side of a bare ankle and foot resting in a dark shoe. Two small solid black silhouettes of figures appear in mid-air, with a crescent shape and a trail of small dots below them. The ink is dark and flat with no shading, set against a warm-toned, slightly soft background of pale paving.

Dear Ruth,

You will not believe what I saw from the lambing shed on Tuesday, so I am writing it down before Dad tells it wrong at the market. It was past two and the frost had the yard gate singing. I went out with the lamp to check the ewe in the top pen and looked up, and there were two shapes crossing the moon. Two children, I'd swear, arms out as if they were riding the wind, one a head taller than the other. The smaller one had her hand up as if she was waving at me.

They were low over the ash trees, and the moon was a thin paring, like the rind of the cheese Mother used to cut. Behind them, trailing off towards Hollin Edge, went a line of little dots, the way rooks scatter from a stubble field. I stood in the straw until my fingers went numb, and the ewe went on ignoring the both of us.

Then the taller one dropped a cap, and it came spinning down into the water trough. I found it this morning, still dry, with a star pencilled inside the lining. I have put it on the windowsill where the light comes in. I know what you'll say about the sherry I had at Christmas.

Come up at the weekend if you can. Bring the good flour. The orchard lads say the moon will be full by Sunday, and I would rather not watch it alone.

Love, Margaret
