Small outline animal on the side of a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on green grass, showing a small tattoo of a simple animal outline on the side of the ankle, near the heel. The linework is a single thin dark line with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey or blue-grey. The tattoo sits low in the frame, with the foot and a dark blue trouser leg filling most of the composition.

Nell had counted the seal's visits the way she counted the bedsheets, by the day, in pencil on the back of the laundry book. Thirty-one so far since the spring tide. Mrs Ogden at number nine said it was a dog that had been swimming too long, and the lad from the chip shop swore it had a name, but Nell knew it came up the slipway below the boarding house at half past six, when the kitchen was still cold and the range hadn't caught.

She started leaving the scraps from the herring in a tin lid on the bottom step. The first morning it ignored her. The second morning it ate with its head tipped sideways, watching her through one wet eye as if she were the one who had come in from the sea. By the end of the week she had learned its shape by heart: the round back, the small rise of the head, the flippers folded like a schoolgirl's hands.
Her father had said the whole coast was made of things that came back. Lost gloves, bottles with notes in them, the same tide in the same spot. On the last Saturday of September she found the seal stretched on the sand with its nose to the lamppost, and a fishing boat tied up crooked behind it. Nobody had told her the boat was leaving. She ran down with the tin lid still in her hand.
The seal was gone by the time she reached the water. Only a dark line in the wet sand where it had been lying, and a single crooked trail back to the slipway. She stood there until her stockings were soaked through, then walked back up to the house and wrote on the laundry book, under the thirty-one: gone out.
