A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bear came out of the birch wood the week the snow went grey, and Mikhail was the only one in the workshop who did not drop his brush. He had spent forty years painting black lacquer trays with gold and red flowers for the market at Semyonov, and he said a bear was no more a stranger to a flower than a sparrow was to a crust of bread. Dasha, his apprentice, thought the old man had gone soft in the head.

The bear did not come in. It stood on the threshold with its great shoulders blocking the light and looked along the bench, where the trays lay drying in rows, black as wet coal. Its eyes went from one to the next the way a buyer's eyes go over a fair, and it stopped at the one with a single poppy half finished in the corner. Dasha swore she heard it sniff.

Mikhail gave it the tray. He had no reason to, and he never could explain it afterwards, except to say that a bear who has walked all winter through the forest has earned one thing that is not hungry. The creature took the tray in its mouth as carefully as a cat takes a kitten, and went off into the trees at a walk. In the morning Dasha found the poppy finished on the step, and on the drying board a new bear, outlined in charcoal, with a tail of yellow scrolls that had not been there the night before.
