Elephant with monarch butterfly wings on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A front-facing elephant head fills the centre of the design, with tusks, wrinkled trunk and textured grey shading that gives it a lifelike, three-dimensional look. Its ears are drawn as orange and black monarch butterfly wings with white spots along the edges. Dry grass shading fades out at the bottom of the piece, and the photo shows the tattoo against a blue fabric background.

You find the elephant in the milkweed at the bottom of Mrs Achterberg's walled garden, though nobody has planted anything there since the war. It stands with its feet sunk in the dry grass, and when you come close enough to see its eyes, you notice its ears are not ears at all. They are folded wings, orange and black, dusted with white along the edges, and they lift each time the wind comes off the wall.

The housekeeper says it came down from the hills in a dry summer, following the scent of the butterflies that had been drifting south for days. Each morning you leave a bucket of water by the gate and a sack of cut stems, and each morning the bucket is empty and the monarchs hang heavier on the stalks. You start a notebook of the counts, writing in pencil because the ink runs in the damp.

In October the wind turns, and the whole garden lifts. Hundreds of wings rise from the grass at once, and the elephant lowers its great grey head and listens, as though reading something in the air. You understand then that the wings were never for flying. All summer it has been sheltering the butterflies in the folds of its skin, where the sun could not scorch them, and now it is handing them back to the sky.

When the last monarch clears the wall, the elephant turns and walks into the grass until only its trunk is visible above the seed heads. You pick up the notebook. The final column is blank, and you leave it that way, because you do not know where the butterflies have gone, only that the milkweed is standing tall and nobody has cut it.
