Run free script on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is photographed from the side against a bright, warm background, with the sole resting on a pale wooden floor. The small script words run free sit on the outer side of the foot near the heel. The lettering is a thin, single black line in a cursive hand, with a slightly uneven weight.

Dear Marguerite, the lamp at Scarrow Head has been out since Tuesday and the keeper's boy swears the gulls are laughing at us. I have your shoes in my coat pocket, the ones with the broken buckle, because you left them under the settle and I could not bear to see them go to the rag bin. Mrs Pellow says you took the carrier cart to Penzance on the Wednesday with nothing but your mother's brass watch and a loaf wrapped in newspaper. I did not stop you, though I might have, and I am writing now to say so.

The cliff path is slick this month. I walked it twice looking for you, once at dawn with the wind pulling at my skirts and once with the lantern, and both times I found only the marks where your heels dug into the turf when you ran the last stretch down to the harbour, the way you did when we were girls and the tide was coming in faster than we liked. Father used to shout at us to walk properly. You never did. You just took the slope in long bounds and laughed at the sea.

I am not cross any more. I have put the shoes on the windowsill where the light from the lamp will catch them once it is lit again. If you are somewhere with better paths, I hope the ground is kind to you. Run if you must. Only send word so I know which way to look.

Your loving sister, Hannah
