Infinity symbols with flying birds flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows four black infinity symbol designs stacked vertically on a white background. The top design has a double-stroke loop, while the second and third have tapering single strokes, and silhouetted birds break away from the loops in the second and third designs. The linework is solid black with no shading or grey tones, and the composition is evenly spaced down the page.

The first gannet of the autumn hits the lantern glass at a quarter past four, and by the time you have your coat on, the bird is a grey heap on the gallery grating, one wing still opening and closing as if it has forgotten it is finished. Mrs Pryce from the mainland calls the light a killer of birds. You call it a bad habit of the sea, and leave it at that.

The logbook has a column for them. Storm petrel, redwing, a stonechat caught in hard frost. Beside the entries you have drawn a loop for years, a figure eight lying on its side, because the beam goes out on one arc and comes round on the other and the sweep never quite ends. Tom Aske taught you that before his knees gave out. He said the lamp writes its name on the water the way a man signs without lifting the pen.
This October a redwing survives the glass. You carry it down the spiral stair in your cupped hands, its heart going like a clock wound too tight, and set it on the fence post by the boathouse at dawn. It sits there while the sun lifts off the sea. Then it goes, low and quick, out past the skerry, and bends north in one long curve.
You log it that night: one redwing, released, alive. Then you draw the loop beside it without lifting the pen, and when you look up, the beam is already going round over the water, pale and patient, returning to where it started and starting again.
