Four-leaf clover on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a four-leaf clover with a long curved stem sits on the side of a bare ankle, above a white knitted sock. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is filled only by the bare skin inside its outline. The plain pale wall and soft background keep the focus on the small black tattoo.

The orchard at Kelmis was the last place my father would have let me go alone, so naturally I went there at dusk, when the bees had gone home and the grass held the cool of the day. I was looking for the rare clover that old Hedda swore grew only where a spring had once broken the ground. I had her directions scratched on the back of a tallow receipt and a stub of charcoal for a pencil.

I found it under the third apple tree, pressed flat against a mossy stone. Four leaves, each one folded like a small wet hand, and a stem so long it curled back on itself as if it had been reluctant to leave the soil. I knelt and cut it with my bronze knife, careful not to bruise the stalk, and wrapped it in a strip of linen torn from my sleeve.

When I got home my father was waiting at the gate with his arms crossed. He asked what I thought I was doing wandering the hills after dark. I told him I had gone to find luck. He laughed, then stopped laughing when he saw the linen was damp with the spring water Hedda had told me to bring back.

He pressed the clover into the wax of my wedding tablet that winter, and it is still there, its outline sharp as the day it dried, four leaves holding nothing but the shape of the ground they came from.
