The abbot caught me again this morning with ink on my thumb and a clover in the margin of the Gospel of Mael. He held the page up to the window the way you hold a fish you suspect of lying, and asked whether the Lord had ever said anything about leaves shaped like hearts. I told him no, but that the hearts were honest ones, and that a plant should be allowed to be fond of something. He did not laugh. He let me keep the page.

Brother Tadhg says the stem is wrong. He says a stem should drop straight to the root and not hang off the leaves like a dropped rope, but I pulled it down the way the wind pulled the gorse on the day you left, bent over at the bottom and nearly broken. Tadhg has never been to the coast. I have not either, but I have seen you leave it.

Here is the thing I have not told anyone. Last night, after compline, I went out past the wall to the field where the old stones are and drew the clover again on the back of a spoiled sheet, this time dipping the pen only once so the line would stay thin. It came out better than the margin. I have sent it folded inside this letter. Keep it somewhere the damp cannot reach. When you find a patch of ground with four leaves where you are, count them, and if there are only three, know that I have counted for you.
