Four origami cranes on a back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Four origami cranes hang on thin vertical lines of dots across the skin. The cranes are drawn with fine, shaded linework and stippled dots, giving them a folded, faceted look. The palette is black and grey, and the cranes sit in a loose diagonal arrangement across the upper back.

Snow had sealed the pass for nine days, and Mrs Oda's inn at the foot of the ridge had run short of everything except paper. Her grandson had carried a bundle of it up from the town before the road closed, thin sheets printed on one side, and she folded them every evening by the stove while the guests argued over the last of the rice.

The travellers stayed longer than they meant to. A tinsmith with a cough, two sisters bound south for a wedding, a surveyor who sketched the valley and never finished it. Each night one of them asked what the folding was for, and Mrs Oda said a crane folded a thousand times would grant a wish, though she had never seen one come true. She threaded the cranes onto lengths of black cord and hung them from the beams, each string a little apart from the next, until the common room looked like a flock of birds held still in the air.
On the ninth morning the thaw arrived in an hour, loud as a dropped tray. The surveyor packed his sketchbook and found, tucked inside the back cover, a crane she did not remember making. Its wing had been creased twice, as if someone had tried to mend it and given up.
He left it on the table beside the stove. She never learned whose hands had made it, so she hung it on the cord with the others, which she decided was the only answer a crane was owed.
