Origami cranes on dotted strings across a shoulder blade

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Five origami cranes hang from thin dotted lines of varying length, arranged in a loose cluster across the upper back. The cranes are drawn with fine, delicate linework and soft stippled shading that gives them folded paper dimension. The design is rendered entirely in black and grey ink on pale skin, with generous empty space around the motif.

Pull that stool closer, the kettle's not boiled and the wind's already at the shutters, so you'll have the story whether you like it or not. You see the strings in the ferry shed on Inchmurra? Five paper cranes hang there, gone the colour of weak tea, and every string is a different length, because nobody measured them. Each bird came from different hands, and each pair of hands belonged to someone who was leaving.

Old Morag Sinclair started it the winter the boats stopped. She had a sheet of ledger paper from the shop in Oban and a ruler she'd taken off her husband's desk. She folded a crane for her son, who had gone to the mainland to work the loading cranes at the port, and hung it from a bit of kitchen twine over the door. The next spring the baker's daughter folded one for her sweetheart, and the schoolmaster folded one for his wife's brother, and the cluster grew the way mussel beds grow, one fixed to another, until the shed looked like a shop full of bells with no bells in it.

The last one is mine. My fingers are too stiff now for the sharp creases, so I folded it wrong, and it has a belly like a bread roll. I tied it to the shortest string, the one nearest the floor, so it's the first thing a child sees when they come in out of the rain. Mind your head on the low one as you go out. It's been waiting a long time for somebody to notice it.
