Origami cranes hanging on dotted strings
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
Four folded paper cranes hang at different heights from thin dotted lines that run down the image. The cranes are drawn with fine, delicate linework and soft grey shading that gives them a folded, three-dimensional look. The design is entirely in black and grey ink against pale skin, with the subjects spread across the frame.

The snow had sealed the lane by Candlemas, so Ada Holm hung her cranes from the byre beam instead of carrying them down to the market in Ashby. There were four that winter, each folded from the back pages of the parish almanac and creased with a thumbnail worn smooth. She strung them on black thread knotted every hand's width, so they hung at different heights like birds that had come down to the same field and stopped to rest. Her husband Tobias said paper would only rot in the damp. Ada said that was the point.

Each crane had a name pencilled on the underside of one wing. The first was for the heifer that calved dead in January. The second was for Tobias's brother, who had gone to Canada and never written. The third was for the lamp oil they could not afford, and the fourth was for the wireless that went quiet in the frost. Ada had not meant to name the last one for herself, but the pencil went that way on its own.
In March the thaw came in a rush and the beam dripped all night. The thread holding the heifer's crane snapped, and the little bird dropped into the straw where the neighbour's boy found it. He turned it over and read the name aloud the way he read feed sacks, slowly, moving his lips. He asked who it was for. Ada took the crane from him and smoothed the wing flat against her apron. Then she pinned a fifth sheet of almanac to the beam, folded it slowly, and left its wing blank.
