Flash sheet of three black line geometric arrow designs with triangles, diamonds, circles and dotted rings on a white background.

Three geometric arrow designs on a flash sheet

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows three vertical arrow designs drawn in black ink on white, each built from straight lines, triangles, diamonds and circles. The left design has dashed guide lines, a solid outlined circle and a dotted ring, while the centre and right designs use layered outlines, filled solid arrowheads and dot accents. The linework is uniform and crisp, with no colour or shading, and the three motifs are spaced evenly down the page.

Bearing two-fourteen, third station, and the chain is still four links short of the stone. Mr Doyle insists the boundary follows the old hedge, but the hedge has walked itself a yard east since the 1881 survey, and I have the plan in my satchel to prove it. Mrs Pargeter at the post office gave me a bag of barley sugar and warned me not to trust anything marked with a triangle. I assumed she meant the bank.

The stone sits at the crossroads below Carrow Down, three arrows cut into its face, one above the other. Two point straight up toward the church tower and one points down into the ground, and the chisel work is so exact that I spent an hour with a lens hunting for a wobble. There is none. Whoever cut it measured each angle with a set square, then sat back and let the rain do its slow, indifferent sums.

On the third evening I laid the transit over the stone and sighted along the lower arrow. It ran straight through the churchyard wall, through the gap where the yew had split, and into the pump house behind the vicarage. Under the pump, bedded in clay, I found a brass box the size of a cigar tin. Inside was a second survey, dated 1802, which agreed with mine to the inch and put the boundary a yard east of Doyle's hedge.

I have copied the figures into my book and folded the old plan into my breast pocket. Tomorrow I will tell Doyle his hedge is trespassing, and he will call me a fool. Let him. The arrows were never pointing at the land. They point at whoever still bothers to check.
