Ornate key and four decorative arrows
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of an ornate skeleton key sits on the left, with swirling scrollwork in the bow and a notched bit. To the right, four slender arrows run vertically, each with a different patterned head and tail in fine black linework. The cream background and dotted divider line separate the two groups, which are presented as a design sheet.

Ottilie Vance kept the only key to the loft above the chandlery in Porthkerris, a heavy iron thing with a bow curled like a fern. Her husband had cut its notches himself, the winter the herring failed. When the lifeboat maroons started up at two in the morning, she climbed the ladder with the key clamped in her teeth, because both her hands were needed for the lamp.

Four long arrows hung on pegs under the rafters. Her husband's cousin, a sign-painter who came home from the war with steady hands and very little to say, had carved their heads like tulips and inked their tails with fine black thread. He told her they were for the rocket men, to be loosed across the reef with a line tied on if a boat went down in the dark. In thirty years nobody had needed one, and the village had come to treat them as decoration.
Tonight the wind tore the first hook of the Maud Ellen's rope from the quay, and the men on the rocks could not reach it. Ottilie fitted the second arrow to the bow, drew until the cord bit her thumb, and loosed. It flew over the broken hull with its tail unspooling behind it, and a boy on the shingle caught the line the way a heron takes a fish.
She locked the loft afterwards and put the key back in her apron. It was lighter by one arrow, and she found she did not mind. She had never much cared for the thing's looks, only for what it was able to open.
