Black and grey realism tattoo wrapping around a forearm in four panels, showing a man in a fedora with a cigar, dice, a vintage car and a figure under a street lamp.

Four-panel vintage street scene on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo runs across four panels around the forearm. The first shows a man in a fedora with a cigar beside dice, the second a vintage car front on with a cash bag, and the third and fourth a vintage car, a street lamp and a lone figure on a cobbled road. The work uses soft, smooth shading and fine detail in black and grey, with a dark background and a misty, muted tone across the scenes.

The dice had stopped rolling an hour before, but nobody in the back room of the Coronet had the nerve to say so. Joe Vellani sat with his fedora tipped low and his cigar gone cold between his teeth, counting the chips in front of him as though they might multiply if he watched long enough. Across the baize, Danny Roake pushed his last twenty forward and waited for a nod that never came.

Outside, the black saloon idled under the gutter lamp on Ferris Street, its grille catching the glow like a row of teeth. In the boot sat a canvas bag stamped with the bank's name, and inside it the wages for the dockers that Joe had been told were never coming. Danny knew the bag. He had carried it once, for a man who did not come back from the Tuesday run.

Danny walked out at half past three with nothing in his pockets but the lamp's reflection. The cobbles were wet, and at the far end of the street a woman in a long coat was walking home from the late shift at the laundry, her heels loud on the stones. Joe watched from the car window and did not follow. Somewhere between the third hand and the fourth, he had decided that a man who loses everything at dice should be allowed to walk away from it.

Joe lit a fresh cigar from the dashboard lighter, turned the bag over on the seat beside him, and listened to the heels fade. In the morning the docks would want their money. By then he would be a shape at the end of a long street, and the lamp above him would finally go out.
