Four small fine line shapes on a palm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with dark painted nails is shown palm side, with four small black tattoos placed in a diagonal line from the base of the thumb towards the wrist. The designs are simple outlined shapes: a crescent, a curved shape resembling a boat or leaf, an angular sail-like form, and a solid spiky burst at the wrist. The ink is black on light skin, and the composition is a close, slightly angled view with the fingers visible above.

The tide has turned before you reach the gatehouse, so you leave the ferry drawn up on the shingle and walk the causeway with your sleeves rolled. Gulls argue over the ruined keep. Ahead, a crescent of wet sand catches the last of the moon still hanging over the mainland, pale as a thumbnail.

Your uncle Eli built the little boat himself, from larch he bought off a wrecked trawler in Seahouses, and he never once let you name her. "Boats with names get homesick," he used to say, then laugh at his own superstition and spit over the side. You named her anyway, in your head, every morning you untied her. Spray curls off the bow like a leaf turning in a gutter.
The sail was patched with a flour sack the winter the bailiff came for the castle rents. On the last night of that winter you hauled it up in a squall with your hands numb, and the sun broke out of the cloud over the Cheviot like a shout, spikes of light spilling across the water so fierce you had to shut your eyes. When you opened them the causeway was back, the keep's broken windows full of gold.
Eli found you asleep on the thwart at dawn. He didn't say anything. He only tapped the sail with one knuckle, the way you tap a barometer that has stopped moving, and went to put the kettle on.
