Four small fine line tattoos: note, moon, anchor, arrow

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

This collage has four close photographs, each showing a tiny tattoo. The designs are a music note behind an ear, a crescent moon on the side of a finger, an anchor on the ankle above a black stiletto shoe, and an arrow on a finger. All are rendered in thin black linework against soft, blurred backgrounds.

The bell on Kettering Relay had stopped answering in the third year of the long dark, so we navigated by the old marks instead. Mother Haas kept them in a tin of pen nibs and bent wire: a crescent for the tidal moon we orbited, a note for the hum the hull made when the fuel ran thin, an anchor for the drift hook we lost off Calder, and an arrow pointing at the one star that never moved.

I was nineteen and had never seen a sea. Haas said our ancestors used to float on water, that a vessel dropped a weight on a rope so it would stop wandering. We had no water, so she taught me to listen. Every night she tapped the hull with a knuckle, and I counted the sour notes until I could tell which bulkhead was cracking.

The night the hum went flat, she handed me the arrow stencil and told me to paint it inside the airlock. Pointing where, I asked. She shrugged. Wherever the moon isn't. We drifted eleven days on the anchor's dead weight, humming the note under our breath, until the crescent swung round and a light winked on the far side of the dark, exactly where the arrow had been aiming all along.

I still have the tin. The wire is bent into a rough arrow now, and I keep it in my pocket so I can feel which way is forward.
