Four snowflakes descending diagonally
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
Four snowflake tattoos are arranged in a diagonal line across pale skin, each one smaller than the one above it. The top snowflake has dotted accents and the lower three have thin, symmetrical arms with small diamond or branch details. All linework is solid black on a soft, light background with no colour.

The first one I cut from a paper napkin at the Sundown Diner, folding it in four the way my nan did with doilies, and Dad pinned it to the sun visor with a hairgrip. He said it was for luck. He said plenty of things on the Carrow Flats road, most of them after the third flask of cold tea, and I had stopped trying to sort the true ones from the rest by the time we crossed the state line.

The road runs ninety miles without a bend, and the heat lifts off the tarmac in wobbling sheets so the horizon keeps sliding away from us like a drawer being shut. Every twenty miles Dad pulls over by a wooden marker, takes the scissors from the glovebox, and makes another flake. Each one comes out a little smaller than the last, because he says the paper is tired and so is he, and because the fourth has to fit between the other three.
Somewhere after the second marker the napkins run out and he starts cutting from the road atlas instead, folding Carrow Flats into points until the arms are thin as pencil lines. I ask him why we are making snow in a place where nothing has ever settled. He says snow doesn't need to stay. It only needs to show you the way it came down.
At the county line he stops and lets me choose the last one. I carry it to the verge and set it on the hot ground. The wind takes it, turns it over twice, and it catches against a stone, a dark speck no bigger than a fingernail, the only snow for forty miles.
