Four stacked triangles line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Four equilateral triangles are stacked vertically on a plain white background, two pointing upward and two pointing downward. A horizontal bar crosses the upper triangle near its apex and the lower triangle near its base. The lines are solid black, of even weight, and the design is entirely outlined with no shading or fill.

Dear Tom,

The stamps came back from the foundry on Tuesday, all four wrapped in brown paper like a parcel of kippers. Dad's brass blocks, the ones he never let either of us touch. Mr Pargeter says the bars across the top and bottom had worn so thin he had to re-cut them by hand, and he charged me two shillings more for the trouble. I paid it without a word, because he looked so pleased with his own handiwork.
Pargeter reckons the marks mean something to the sailmakers down at Grimsby, a way of showing cloth has been soaked through and dried again. I have no idea whether that's true. Dad never explained the shop's marks to either of us, only that the carter wouldn't take a crate without them. The upward triangles he called the sure ones and the downward the wet ones, and he'd tap the bars with his thumbnail as if he were checking a hinge.
I stamped the crates myself this morning, in the yard, with the wind coming off the mudflats and making the paint dry tacky on my fingers. Three crates went on the lorry before dinner. The fourth I set aside on the bench and laid the brass out in order, top to bottom, the way the set arrived. Then I pressed only the three and left the lowest downward triangle clean on the wood.
I'll keep that one open for you. Come home and do the last of them yourself, if you ever do.
Mary
