Cat face tattoo on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's face is drawn in black linework with open almond-shaped eyes, a small triangular nose and whiskers extending past the cheeks. Fine hatching and light shading on the ears and forehead add some depth, while the cheeks and muzzle are left mostly open. The tattoo sits centrally on the arm against a pale blurred background, with a salmon-coloured sleeve on the left.

Dear Tom, The cat came out from under the petrol pump at Cutter's Wells on Tuesday, looked at me the way the bank manager looks at a cheque, and I have decided it is ours now. You will hate that. I know you will.

It is a grey tabby with a narrow face and eyes that never seem to shut, and whiskers that run out past its cheeks as if it is measuring the gap between the cab and the cattle grid. It rode the rest of the way to Sallow Flat on the dashboard of the lorry with its paws tucked under, and ate half a tin of sardines off my knee without once looking down.

Mrs Achterberg at the diner says it belonged to the surveyor who lived in the caravan behind the garage. He drove off the Sallow road one night in the spring and was never found, and the cat went on sitting at the end of the forecourt every evening, facing west, as if it had a bus to meet. Nobody had the heart to move it. I thought about that for a long time, and then I bought it a collar in the chemist.

I've booked us a room above the bakery for a fortnight, which is more than the lorry firm would have paid for. The cat has taken the windowsill and sits there now watching the road out past the water tower. Ask me on Sunday what I've named it. I'm still deciding between Surveyor and Mrs Achterberg's suggestion, which was Kettle.

Love, Nell
