Black and grey realism tattoo of a snarling wolf head over a ram with curled horns, on the outer upper thigh.

Wolf and ram head on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A snarling wolf's head sits in the upper part of the design, with its teeth bared and its muzzle overlapping a ram's head below. The ram's curled horns and woolly fur frame the lower half of the image. The piece uses fine, detailed shading in black and grey on a dark outline, with the rendering concentrated on the eyes, fur and horns.

Dear Tam,

The ram is back in the top field, though you'd not know him for the same beast. He came home over the dyke on Tuesday with half his fleece torn away and blood dried black on one horn, and he stood at the gate as if he'd been expecting the post. The lads from the Kielder side have been at the lambs again. Bill Armstrong lost eleven ewes in one night and found nothing of them but ear tags in the beck.

Bill says it was the grey wolf that came over from the forest, the one the Ridleys were said to keep chained for baiting. I don't believe a word of it, but I sat up with the lamb pens two nights running with the lantern and the shotgun across my knees, and on the second night I heard it. Not howling. Breathing, low and close, by the water trough. Then the ram came round the corner of the barn with his head down, and the wolf came out of the dark to meet him, and I thought that would be the end of the pair of them.

It wasn't. They stood at the stone wall, snout to brow, neither giving an inch. The ram's breath smoked and the wolf's teeth were bared, and I swear the moon slid behind a cloud so I could not see which of them was winning. When it came out again the wolf had gone back over the dyke and the ram was grazing as if nothing had happened.

I have taken his bell off and am sending it with this letter in case the post takes a fancy to it. Ring it if you are coming home before the snow. Your loving wife, Margaret.
