Wolf stalking forward in ink wash

Black and grey · Flash

A wolf is shown head-on, head lowered and stepping forward towards the viewer, with a paw print in the ground beneath its front paw. The fur is built up with loose, feathered brushstrokes in black ink and grey washes, leaving areas of bare white paper for highlights. The composition is centred, with the animal filling most of the frame against a plain white background.

The wolf came down Harrow Lane the night the gas failed across Millbank, and Mrs Eade, who had buried two husbands and had no patience left for nonsense, swore she watched it stop beneath the chapel lamp, lower its head like a man picking up a dropped coin, and set one forepaw on the wet stones as carefully as a clerk signing for a parcel.

Tom the lamplighter had no matches and no sense either, so he went out after it with his unlit pole over his shoulder. His mother had told him never to look a wolf in the eye. He looked. The eyes were grey and patient, and there was nothing in them to fear, only the business of a creature with a long way to walk. It kept to the middle of the road where the setts were broken, and wherever it set its paw the print filled with a little silver water, as though the street remembered it.

Past the bridge the wolf turned into the yard of the foundling home, where the old well had been bricked over in the spring. It put its nose to the brickwork and breathed, and a cold draught came out of the stone, smelling of peat and rain. Tom understood then that the city had always had a wild road running under it, and every lost thing in Millbank had been walking down that road for years toward the same door.

The wolf looked at him once more and went on, unhurried, into the dark between the houses. By morning the gas was back on, the lamp at the chapel corner was burning, and in the yard there was only a single print in the wet grit, pressed deep, with a rim of water in it that never quite dried.
