The water had run out at the well at Kesh Ridge, so the carters went on through the dark, forty wagons strung out along the salt road. Old Abbas walked at the front with a lantern, because the ruts were faint and the wind filled them with sand by morning. When the flame guttered, a pair of pale eyes was watching him from the side of the track, steady as two coins.

The wolf did not growl. It came up beside the lead mule and walked with it, its ruff full of dust and its coat marked in long bands and stripes like the patterned cloth the traders sold in the market at Tarrin. Abbas asked what it wanted. The wolf turned its broad head towards the dunes to the north, then back towards him, and waited until he understood that the road bent there, and that the bend ran straight over the old cistern pits.

He turned the wagons. The drivers grumbled until dawn, but then the pits showed plainly, black mouths half hidden under the sand, and a camel had already gone into one. Abbas went looking for the wolf to thank it, but there were only its tracks, leading east, each print pressed deep as though the animal had carried something heavy. The next night he left a skin of water at the bend, and the night after that, and the skin was always empty by morning.

Nobody has seen the wolf in forty years. The carters still water the bend, though, and when a wagon goes wrong on the salt road the youngest driver walks out ahead with a lantern, looking for two pale lights in the dark.
