Fox tattoos on both feet

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

Two fox designs sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, one fox curled on each foot with its tail wrapping around the foot. The fox outlines are bold and black, with orange and red fills and teal shading that blends softly into the skin. Swirling black line foliage frames each design, and the feet are shown against a pale yellow-green surface.

Sit closer, you with the cold hands, and mind the embers. This is the tale of the vixen sisters of Harrowmere, in the kingdom of Lesser Ambry, which has no map and never will, so don't go searching your atlas for it.

Every autumn the river Tallow spilled over the water meadows, and every autumn the sisters Ysolde and Brannagh went down through the reeds to see what the flood had carried in. Ysolde was the clever one. She could read a footprint in the mud the way a clerk reads a ledger. Brannagh was the listener. She heard the drowned bell beneath the mere, and she knew which willow had been planted over a grave.

One year the water took the bridge at Corran Ford, and the miller's boy with it. The king's men shrugged and said the river had kept him, and that was the end of it. Ysolde did not believe a river could keep anything it had not been paid for. She followed the tracks up through the bramble, where the roots curled round the stones like sleeping cats' tails, and found the boy sitting dry in a hollow, mending a fishing net with rushes and a great deal of swearing.

Brannagh laughed when she heard, a sound like silver tipped from a sack. "The water is honest," she said. "It takes what it is owed and returns what it borrowed. It is only the men who lie about the bridges." And so the sisters still walk the flood's edge, one on each bank, their tails wrapped twice around the ankles of anyone foolish enough to cross at dusk, so the river knows it is being watched.
