Matching cartoon line tattoos on foot and thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two cartoon figures are drawn in thin black outline on the top of a foot and on the upper thigh, with a small heart beside the figures on the foot. A separate black band of swirling, scroll-like linework wraps around the calf below. The linework is fine and uniform with no shading, and the tattoos are all in black ink against bare skin, with the figures set against a neutral background of sofa and clothing.

Pim had drawn the dog from memory, which was why his ears came out the size of teacups and his tail ran off the edge of the page. Bramble, the cat, was already waiting in the margin when he finished. She had one paw raised the way she always did when she wanted something, and a small heart floated above her head because Pim had forgotten to rub out the one he had doodled there the night before.

They lived at the back of an exercise book that nobody in the village of Hollin Wood ever opened. Every evening, after the lamps went out at the vicarage, they climbed down the spine and went looking for the ivy at the edge of the page, where the loops grew so thick they never quite joined. Bramble said the loops were a map. Pim said they were only ivy. They argued about it all the way to the margin, and then they stopped arguing, because the ivy had grown over the path again and they had to find another way through.

On the last night of the month, the exercise book was carried out to the bins and left under the hedge in the rain. Pim found it by the smell of wet paper. He lay down beside Bramble on the soggy cover with his big ears folded flat, and she curled into the crook of his arm as though the page were warm.

"Map's still wrong," she said.

"Mm," said Pim. "We'll draw a better one tomorrow."
