Free your mind script on the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads free your mind in a flowing cursive script in black ink, running across the top of the shoulder and upper back. The linework is thin and even, with the letters finishing in a fine tail stroke. The top photo shows the tattoo at a wider angle with a necklace chain beside it, and the lower photo shows it closer up on warm skin with soft shading.

In the year the Ness light was fitted with an electric lamp, old Tam Rennie would not give up climbing the stairs each dusk. His daughter Morag, who was nine, carried his tea up the hundred and twelve steps in a tin pail, and each night she found him in the lantern room with a pencil, writing on the backs of the tide tables in a hand so slanted it seemed to lean into a wind.

"What are you writing, Da?" she asked.
"Words for the sea to keep," he said. "The boats can't read them, but the sea reads everything in the end." When she asked for one of her own, he wrote four words in a flowing hand, with a fine tail trailing off the last letter, and told her that a light does not need a keeper to hold it up all night. Morag folded the paper into her pocket and forgot about it, the way children forget the things that matter most.
The winter the engine failed, Tam took the boat to the mainland for medicine and did not come back. Morag climbed the stairs alone with the lamp unlit and the storm coming in off the water. In the wet pocket of her coat she found the paper, soft as cloth, and read the words again by the light of the match she struck to see by.
She lit the wick by hand, and kept it burning until the sun came up over Ness, and the boats came home one by one.
