French bulldog in top hat and suit

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a French bulldog's head and upper body, dressed in a top hat, a collared shirt, a waistcoat and a tie. The dog's fur, ears and face are rendered with soft, detailed shading that gives it a photographic look. The design is in greys and black, and the dog fills most of the frame against a partly visible arm and torso.

Nobody at the Gilded Pig in Leeds had ever seen Monsieur Dufresne sit down. He stood on the lid of the upright piano every evening in a black waistcoat and grey silk tie, his top hat tipped over one ear, glaring at the gaslight as if it owed him money. When I came in at six to scrub the stage boxes, he was already watching me from up there, unimpressed by the bucket.

The conjuror who owned him, Lucien Marsh, had skipped town in March with the takings and a lady from the Empire, leaving behind a trunk of painted props, a tin of mustard and the dog. Nobody wanted a French bulldog with a temper, so Dufresne stayed on, paid in bread crusts and the manager's grudging nods. I took to sharing my tea biscuits with him on the back stairs. He accepted them very politely, which is more than I can say for most men on that street.

On the last Saturday of the summer season, the manager sent for him. Dufresne was carried onstage in a laundry basket, and the audience of drapers and their wives roared when he climbed out, straightened the hat with one paw and walked to the footlights with the dignity of a bishop. He looked over the crowd for a long, unimpressed moment, then dropped a folded envelope from the hatband onto the boards. Inside were a Bradford address and eleven pounds in notes, and the manager went very pale.

Dufresne never did sit down for me. But every morning after that he left the hat on the piano for me to brush.
