Sixty summers ago the wall at the bottom of this garden had a crack in it the shape of a heart, a thin line of mortar the frost kept opening. My father swore he'd fill it. He never did, because every spring the ivy crept into the line and drew it darker, and he said a thing left alone long enough has earned its outline.

The year the postman stopped coming up the lane, a girl named Nell Harrow came to help with the pears. She had a pencil behind one ear and a habit of tracing things with a single finger. She traced that crack, traced the ivy, traced my father's palm when he showed her how to graft. Nobody told her she was drawing the thing over again. She just kept going round the edge, one line, no colour, the way you'd outline a word you weren't sure you were allowed to say.
When the letters came from the coast, she read them against the wall with her back to the house. She folded the last one into a square and pushed it into the crack, and the frost took it, and by August there was nothing left but a faint pale heart in the brick. Mind you, the pears did well that year. Best crop we ever had. Hand me that trowel, and take the long way back to the gate, so you pass under the fig.
