The laundrette below the flat is still turning, the drum thumping like someone knocking to be let in. Mrs Okafor from downstairs brought up a pan of soup at nine and sat on the radiator while I told her about the solicitor's letter. She said nothing for a long time, then said her husband used to write the same three words on the back of every envelope he posted to Lagos.

I found his old card in the drawer this evening, under the takeaway menus. It was written in joined pencil, the capitals looping as if they were reaching for something. Stay strong, it said, and underneath, in smaller letters, Dad would have liked the soup. I have been holding it up to the lamp for an hour, trying to decide whether it is advice or a dare.
Tomorrow I am going to the court at ten. You don't need to come, and I know you can't leave the shop anyway, but if you're awake at half past, look out of the back window towards the canal. I will be the small figure in the green coat doing her best impression of someone who isn't frightened.
