Friends by chance, sisters by choice lettering
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two cartoon characters with faces, one tan and one magenta, hold hands in front of a yellow and orange starburst. Script lettering in black wraps above and below them, reading friends by chance and sisters by choice. The bold outlines and flat fills give a traditional cartoon look, and the text is arranged to frame the central figures.

The bread rack at Pruett's on Mill Lane held forty-odd loaves that Tuesday, and I was the only plain white tin among them, which made me the first to be sold and the last to be wanted. The beetroot rye three places down was the sort of bread people bought for a dinner party. Mrs Pruett dropped us both into the same paper sack when the bell over the door went, and we spent the walk home bumping crusts in the dark. By the time the sack hit the kitchen table on Hollins Road we had argued about butter, the proper way to slice, and whether a ration could be made to taste of anything at all. Her name was Maud. She had been left behind by a girl who got married and moved to Harrogate. I said I had no name, only a sticker, and she said that was worse.
The toaster in that kitchen had one red eye and a habit of going off like a firework. The morning it finally popped, the two of us came up together, golden and glowing in a burst of steam, and the little girl who lived there, who was nine and had no interest in bread, clapped her hands and said we looked like we were shaking hands at a wedding. Maud and I were not sure what that meant. We were not sure of much, except that we had come up at the same time and nobody had thought to separate us.
Eleven years on, we still share a shelf, and nobody on Hollins Road has ever worked out which of us is the sister. We never settled that either. It was the first thing we chose.
