Finn and Jake quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows Finn, in blue, on the left and Jake, in yellow, on the right, joined by a stretched arm across the forearm. The words Homies help homies. Always are written in black script between the two characters. The linework is bold and clean, with flat areas of blue and yellow fill and a simple, centred composition.

The river had been wider than anyone remembered since the sky turned green, and the boy on the near bank had a sack of seed corn and a sprained ankle. The dog on the far side watched him from under a willow with its ears pressed flat against the wind. Nobody in the Tree Fort country had a boat that still floated, so the dog did what dogs in the old stories did and put its mind to it.

It stretched. Not all at once, but a little each day, the way bread dough rises in a warm kitchen. First its front leg reached the reeds, then the bank, and then its shoulder came loose and hung out over the water like a yellow plank. The boy climbed onto it with the sack held against his chest. The dog told him to keep his eyes on the willow and not on the brown water, and he did.
Halfway over, the boy asked why it would do this for someone it had met only once at the market. The dog said that in its grandmother's time there had been words painted on the side of the granary, black letters in a hand nobody could read any more: homies help homies, always. It had never known what homies were. It thought they might be the people you walked far for.
They reached the far bank as the sun went down. The boy pulled the dog's arm back into shape and it snapped into place with a sound like a wet sheet. Years later the boy, grown, with his own arms full of seed, pointed at the willow and told the children the river was still there, and so was the dog, and so was the old word.
