Kawaii jellyfish with quote on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon jellyfish with a large pink bell, big eyes, lashes and a smile floats across the upper arm, with tentacles trailing downwards. Bold black outlines, sparkle motifs and small bubbles surround it, and the lettering above reads I don't think you're ready for this JELLY in black script with the word JELLY in orange block capitals. Pink, magenta, orange and turquoise ink dominate, with soft shading on the bell and tentacles against plain skin.

Kit had the filling bag in one hand and a tray of forty doughnuts going cold in the other when Dilys took the bag off him without looking up. 'Not like that. You'll have them bursting before the shutters go up.'

It was twenty to five and the bakery on Harbour Row still smelled of last night's proving dough. The oven ticked. Over the car park the sky had gone the colour of weak squash, and the gulls had not yet started their complaining. Dilys pressed her thumb into the side of a doughnut, found the pocket, and eased the nozzle in with a patience that made Kit feel about nine.
'Jelly's not the same as jam,' she said. 'Jam holds its shape. Jelly wants to be somewhere else.'
He watched the raspberry go in, slow and round, and the doughnut swelled like something breathing. She set it on the rack and dusted it with sugar. Then she tapped the chalkboard by the door, where a pink jellyfish with a sparkly face had been smiling under the bread prices since her niece drew it on a wet afternoon in June. Beneath it, in Dilys's careful capitals, ran the line she'd written when Kit first asked for a go on the nozzle.
The first customer that morning, a man in a hi-vis jacket, bit into one at the counter. Raspberry shot onto his chin and his eyebrows went up. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step, and Kit, holding the bag, finally understood what she had meant.
