FRIENDS lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of the word FRIENDS tattooed in black lettering across the inside of a wrist, with the letters spaced apart. Each gap between the letters holds a small dot in red, yellow, green or blue, and the final S is shaded lighter grey. The image is centred on the wrist against a soft, blurred background.

Maud Pellow kept the boarding house at the end of Gull Row, and every September the sea left something on her step that it had no right to carry. The first year it was a brass key with no lock. The second it was a child's wooden boat, its sail still dry. The third it was a sack of spoons, every one bent the same way.

In the fifth year, on the night the wind swung north, someone knocked at the back door. Maud found six people on the step, wet to the knees, and not one of them knew the others. They had come off a ferry that had not run since the war. They asked for beds. Maud said the house had room for them, though the rooms were arranged strangely. Along the upstairs passage there were seven doors, and between each pair of doors hung a small glass lamp, one red, one yellow, one green, one blue. The last door, at the far end, was painted grey and had no lamp beside it at all.

The guests stayed a week, then a month. Each morning Maud laid breakfast along the long table, and the strangers found that the gaps between their chairs were exactly the width of a hand. Each evening one of them lit a lamp in the passage. Nobody had told them to. The lamps simply seemed to want lighting.

In October a girl with paint on her cuffs asked Maud what the grey door was for. Maud said it was for whoever came next, and that the house had never once got the spacing wrong. The girl laughed, sat down in the empty chair, and reached for the last spoon, which was bent the same way as all the others.
