Two wrists with matching black half-heart tattoos, one reading best and the other friends, shown beside clenched fists.

Matching half-heart wrist tattoos

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two clenched fists are shown with their wrists facing the camera. Each wrist has a solid black half-heart with a jagged, torn edge, and the word best sits under the left heart while friends sits under the right, both in a plain typewriter-style font. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the matching pair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell tore the Christmas card down the middle with her teeth before Marnie could stop her. "Jagged, so they'll fit," she said, pressing the halves together until the edges caught like the teeth of a zip. The card was from the Co-op, a robin on a snowdrift, and it was the only thing in the flat that didn't belong to somebody's mum.

Marnie was signing on to a trawler out of Grimsby for three months, the Ada Louise, and she had a bag packed by the door before the sun was up. Nell kept her half in the biscuit tin under the sink, next to the spare keys and a bus timetable from a year that no longer ran. Every Sunday she typed a letter on her gran's old machine, one key at a time, and every letter ended with the same two words in the margin: best, friends. She never sent them. She said there was no point posting paper to a boat.

The Ada Louise came back nine days late, grey with salt and smelling of diesel. Nell was on the sea wall with the tin in her lap when the crew came up the gangway, and Marnie walked the whole length of the harbour without looking at anyone else. She sat down beside her, took her own half from the inside pocket of her coat, and laid it against Nell's. The edges took hold with a small dry click, like a latch, and for a while neither of them said anything at all.
