Frog and octopus on the neck
Neo-trad · Neck · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style green frog peers out from among blocky shapes, with an orange octopus tentacle curling across the lower half and a purple coral-like form on the right. The outlines are bold and the shading is smooth, with raised bumps on the frog's skin. A pale teal wash sits behind the design and the image is taken close up at an angle.

The frog had been living in the old ferry shed since before anyone in Cullen Bay could remember, and Mrs Haskett insisted it was the only honest tenant on Quay Street. Every morning Dougie Pell rolled up the shutter and found it sitting on the bollard by the crab pots, blinking at him as if he owed it rent. He never charged it. He did once try to shift it with a bucket, and it climbed straight back up the handle and sulked on the rim.

The octopus arrived in March, stuffed into a lobster creel that had drifted in from the Skerries. It had one arm wrapped round a tin of paint and another round the wheel of a pram. Nobody could say how it had got there, but it took to the frog at once, which was the trouble. Between them they got into the paint store, mixed the teal that now covered the shed wall, and painted a bright orange shape over the sign for the Cullen Bay Lifeboat Supper, so the poster read only SUPPER with a squid hanging off the S.
The council sent a letter. Dougie read it aloud on the step while the frog listened with its chin up. Then the octopus unrolled itself, took the letter gently between two suckers, and folded it into a boat. They launched it in the harbour puddle and watched it spin out past the slipway, past the purple coral of rusted anchor chain that the fishermen had left heaped by the wall, and out toward the lighthouse.
The frog reckoned that was a fair answer. Dougie did too, and he went inside to put the kettle on.
