A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The soot ball was already under the back seat of the 23 when I spotted it, rolling about like a dropped conker of black wool, two pale eyes swivelling up at me as if I were the one who had boarded uninvited. I had been taking them home since the depot boiler was condemned in February. They ride for free, they never complain about the heating, and they always get off at the last stop on Bramley Lane, which is the only bit of Leeds where the streetlamps give up and the sky opens up enough to count stars.

This one had a yellow star on a thread tangled round one stick leg and an orange star bobbing above it like a balloon at a fair. It had nicked a little green-gold star from the lamp post outside the Co-op, and it held that one in its fist, clutching it to its middle as though someone might try to take it back. I asked the usual question, where to, and it gave me the usual answer, which is a sort of clicking noise and a point up the hill towards the reservoir.

At the last stop I opened the doors and waited. The sprite hopped down the step, leaving a faint smudge of soot on the rubber, then paused and looked back at me. I could have sworn it tipped the yellow star at the windscreen, the way you might doff a cap. Then the threads pulled taut and all three stars lifted off into the dark above the reservoir, shrinking until I could no longer tell which was which.

Next morning there was a single smudge of soot on the inside of the windscreen, shaped roughly like a sprite waving. I have never cleaned it off.
