Hello Kitty with cherry blossom and fan

Japanese · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Hello Kitty character with a red bow, surrounded by pink cherry blossom petals and flowers, with a grey folding fan beneath. Bold black outlines define the motifs, and the fan is shaded from dark grey to light. Pink, red, green and orange ink is used for the petals, leaves and bow against the pale skin, with the composition arranged vertically along the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have swept the same stretch of flagstones three times since breakfast, and the cherry petals keep falling on it as if they had an appointment. The tree at the bottom of Mrs Hayashi's garden was planted before the house, before the wall, before the cat who now sits on the wall pretending the view belongs to her. Its branches lean over the pond to check their reflections, and every April they drop a little pink apology on whoever is trying to work.

The cat is called Kiki, though nobody has ever told her so, and she has a red bow tied where her ears should be. She arrives each afternoon with a folding fan tucked under one arm, which she opens with a flick that sends three petals spinning into the air. You tell her that is not how you sweep. She tells you nothing, because she has no mouth to speak with, only a small orange dot at the centre of her face that seems to disapprove of you.

On Thursday the wind came up off the valley and the fan slipped from her paw into the pond. You reached for it before you had decided to, the water was colder than you expected, and you came up spluttering with a lily pad on your shoulder. Kiki sat on the edge with the fan dripping in her lap, looking entirely unsurprised.

That evening you hung the fan on the nail by the back door to dry. In the morning it was open, pleated like a sunrise, with a single blossom pressed into its folds. You still sweep the path. You just leave the petals on the side where she can find them.
