Watercolour kitten on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A kitten's face peeks out from loose watercolour splashes, with its head turned towards the viewer and a green-blue eye and grey-green eye visible. The linework is soft and blended, with the fur shaded in purple, grey and peach tones. Vivid blue, purple, red and orange washes spread outwards across the skin and fade into speckled edges.

Mind the trestle, love, it's been in that spot since before your mams were pupils, and so has my knee. Sit down, the urn's nearly ready. Pryce said it to the whole hall, not to anyone in particular, the way he'd once read out the register.

You'll remember the art block before they knocked it down for the car park. Year Nine were using the good watercolours that day, and Danny Fenwick knocked the whole tray off the bench. Blue and violet ran across the wet sheet like weather, and when it dried there was a face in it. Two eyes peered out from the spill, one blue-green and one grey-green, with a sharp little nose made from nothing but the white of the paper.

Next morning a stray came in through the window that never latched. Grey and peach, with a torn ear, and it walked straight to the sheet on the drying rack and sat down beneath it as if it had been asked. Nobody owned it. Miss Adeyemi fed it tuna from a jam jar lid and swore the head would have a fit, but the head never did, because he never once looked in the art block.

The painting's still in the staffroom cupboard, if nobody's thrown it out. Go and look at the eyes. They still don't match, and I like to think that's the cat's doing.
