You will not believe what the Tuesday cat has done. Mr Hollis swore he'd put the tins out of its reach, but when I climbed the ladder to touch up the backcloth this morning, there it sat on the tallest plank, washing one paw as if it had been waiting for me. Its eyes are the blue of the sea off Cleethorpes on a bright day, and I'd swear they followed my hand.

We had the band in last night for rehearsal, and the floor was thick with sawdust and dancers' heels. I'd been mixing washes all week for the new sky Mr Hollis wants for the summer ball, and I'd left the saucers out. The cat walked straight through the violet and the sage green and the orange we were saving for the sunset, then stepped onto the wet pink corner. Every paw print came out as a little rainbow on the canvas. Mr Hollis came in shouting, stopped dead in front of it, and said nothing at all, which for him is a sort of miracle.

So we've decided to keep the mess. The cat's face sits in the middle of the backcloth now, all blue eyes and dark nose, with the colours spilling out behind it like steam off a kettle. Mr Hollis says the dancers will ask about it. I told him they can ask the cat. I'm sending a sketch with this letter, though it doesn't do the thing justice. Come up at the weekend and see it under the lights. Bring your good shoes.
