Dear Hal, the cat came back this morning with stars in her fur. I know how that sounds, so come and look before you tell the boatmen I've gone soft. She walked up the shingle at first light, sat on the cistern cover and stared at the sea as if it owed her money, and when the sun got under the cloud her coat was all bruised purples and rusty pinks, like the sky over the Sound the night the Halcyon went down. Little white specks sat in it, dozens, and when I tried to brush one off with my thumb it wasn't dust. It was cold.
